You might have been wondering why your tunes sound like they are kinda lacking something, and don't have the same top notch sound as Noisia or Apex? The secret is that they use the highest quality sample CDs that you don't.

Nearly all top Dubstep musicians use clips, except they wouldn't admit it.

Using professional-sounding, speaker-busting, drum samples is essential to creating music that sounds solid in the mix. When you employ rough-sounding drum samples your drum loops will end up waste too much time generating their own drum samples.

How to Find Samples

There's 2 ways to get hold of clips and loops. One can sometimes locate free samples online, from fellow musicians, or you can just buy sample DVDs from good companies. The latter the best route, but I will explore the differences between each.

Free Stuff?

Free samples are enticing. Who dislikes free? If you're going to use free samples you must keep a few things in mind.

When you get free samples you gotta be very sure that the samples are totally cleared. For all you know the samples you've using might have been sampled from another artist's music. Getting sued is the last thing you want!

Another thing to think about with free samples is the sound quality. Often free samples are not great quality and haven't been mastered.

Retail Samples

Buying sample CDs is really the ultimate way to go.

Professional sample DVDs are usually pre engineered which means you can lay them down directly into your song with hardly any mixing. Assuming you buy Dubstep samples CDs that are royalty-free you have basically nothing to fret about on the legal side of things.

You only have to buy one sample DVD and you can use the samples to develop much more exciting and different samples. Just about all the top producers have been doing this for years.

Anyway you decide, always go for good quality. Often you get what you pay for, so you should never expect free samples to be the best quality. Although a $50 sample CD might seem like a total waste of money, the effort and time it will save the producer is a fantastic time saver.

But if you're really ambitious, the best way to make very original dubstep is to find, record, or create your own sounds to go with your own beats. But given the vast list of techniques you can use to change and edit found clips into something totally original, always keep your library of purchased samples and clips nearby.
